Curriculum Program Overview


The Elementary educational program at Dhahran Ahliyya consists of Arabic, English, Science, Math, Social and Religious Studies, Special Subjects such as Physical Education, Arts and Computer along with the enrichment clubs program. In Early Elementary (grades 1-3 girls and grades 1-4 boys), the homeroom teacher teaches all subjects except for the special subjects. However, in Upper Elementary (grades 4-6 girls and grades 5-6 boys), there is one teacher for every subject. Science and Math are taught in both languages alternately (one year in Arabic and the following year in English). There are several academic supervisors for the Elementary grade levels who focus on students’ learning and guide the teachers. You are welcome to contact the school to meet the supervisors and get to know their teams.

» Language Arts (Arabic and English):

In teaching languages, we implement the Balanced Language Program. Within workshops, we focus on the skills and strategies of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Our weekly language program consists of the following:

  1. Daily readings.
  2. Shared reading sessions.
  3. Guided reading sessions in which students are divided into homogeneous small groups.
  4. Independent reading sessions.
  5. Writing sessions.

We evaluate the students periodically on the basis of:

  1. Summative Assessments.
  2. Running Records: This is an evaluation tool adapted to Arabic language needs by a group of teachers at Dhahran Ahliyya Girls’ Schools. It measures the reading aloud and comprehension in Arabic and determines the students’ levels in these two skills.This evaluation includes a gradual measure for recognizing different phonemic sounds, identifying alphabetic letters, identifying words and reading syllables. Then, students move to reading texts from different levels.
  3. DRA: Is an evaluation tool that measures reading aloud and comprehension in English and determines the students’ levels in these two skills. This evaluation includes a gradual measure for recognizing different phonemic sounds, identifying alphabetic letters and reading texts from different levels.
  4. Arabic MIQYAS Tests for all elementary grades and MAP English Tests for grades 2 and above.

» Mathematics:

We begin teaching mathematics by using sensory tools, solving word problems and using correct mathematical language when explaining and interpreting ideas. We teach mathematics in Arabic for grades1,2,3 and 5 whereas mathematics in English is taught for grades 4 and 6.

In mathematics, we evaluate the students on the basis of common benchmark based assessments, English MAP tests grades 4 & 6 and summative assessments.

» Science:

In teaching science, we focus on scientific inquiry throughout:

  1. Observation.
  2. Asking questions.
  3. Developing hypotheses.
  4. Conducting experiments.
  5. Collecting and representing data.
  6. Drawing conclusions.

We expect all our students to use the correct scientific language when explaining and interpreting ideas. We teach science in English for grades 3 and 5 whereas science in Arabic is taught for grades 1, 2, 4 & 6.

In science, we evaluate the students on the basis of daily assessments, performance tasks; formative and summative assessments.

» Religious Studies:

In grades 1 & 2, we teach integrated Religious Studies lessons. At the end of every semester, we organize the Quran Competition in order to encourage our students to memorize the Holy Quran. In grades 3-6, we work on teaching students Quran recitation, Quran and Sunnah comprehension skills and values. We focus on providing the students with the basic knowledge of “Fiqah and Tawheed” and the pillars of Islam. We also emphasize Islamic ethics and morals which are the fruits of these religious rituals.

» Social Studies:

In the light of the International Standards, the Social Studies curriculum for grades 3-6 include the biographies of Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- and his caliphates, and the history of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia. We also teach the geographical aspects of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Countries. In addition to that, students in grade 5 are taught geography in English. The program includes the main aspects of geography such as locations, regions, movement and interactions of different people.

In social studies, we evaluate the students on the basis of daily assessments, performance tasks, formative assessments and summative assessments.

»Special Subjects

The Special Subjects Department includes Arts, Physical Education, Computer and Health Education. These subjects provide the students with opportunities that lead to an integrated growth and develop their artistic sense. Also, special subjects encourage the students to maintain good care for their health and physical fitness as basic skills. Our educational programs are based on international standards that allow the students to gain different skills such as problem solving, decision making and cooperative learning throughout conducting a wide range of tasks and presentations.

» Arts:

Arts at Dhahran Ahliyya Schools aims at developing the students’ artistic sense and strengthening their art criticism and social skills. We achieve these purposes throughout enabling the students to gain the knowledge, skills and artistic attitude. We teach the principles of arts throughout a variety of projects that vary from drawing and painting to designing and building. Upon working on these projects, the students use different materials such as papers, metals, glass and plastic. Furthermore, there is the digital drawing and design using special computer software.

» Physical Education:

Physical Education aims at helping the students to gain knowledge, skills and the necessary attitudes to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Focusing on the Fitness for Life principle, we raise the students’ awareness about the fitness skills they need. Also, we teach them to create their personal fitness goals.

The Physical Education course is based on international standards that cover all grade levels starting from Kindergarten to High School. The courses are designed to suit all students in both Boys’ and Girls’ schools and fulfill their needs. Also, these courses contribute in establishing values like cooperation, differentiation and respect within the students. In order to practice what the students learn, there are a variety of scheduled athletic events, championships and teams for different kinds of sports.

The Physical Education team at Dhahran Ahliyya works on measuring the fitness elements for all DAS students and share the results with the students as well as the parents. In light of these results, the team works on developing the students’ physical performance by providing them the opportunity to participate in different events both inside and outside the school. When comprising teams, the Physical Education team considers the educational goals and the students’ different physical skills and psychological needs. Furthermore, the team employs these activities to reinforce Dhahran Ahliyya’s targeted characteristics and practice them on real life.

» Computer:

The Computer Curricula at Dhahran Ahliyya Schools aim at providing students with the essential technology skills for the 21st century. The curricula are based on international standards starting from grade 1 to grade 12 in which we work on developing the digital citizenship within DAS students. The Computer educational program prepares the students to become competent in utilizing technology and applications in different fields specially programming and problem-solving using computer languages.
