Dhahran Ahliyya Schools are currently implementing the IB Primary Years Programme. The IB Primary Years Programme, for students aged 3 to 10 from Pre-KG to Grade 5, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the outside world. The PYP which believes that the student learns best in an authentic, relevant to the "real" world; and transdisciplinary nature, where the learning is not confined within the boundaries of traditional subject areas but is supported and enriched by them. The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Programme is the six transdisciplinary themes. These themes are about issues that are globally significant and have meaning for and are important to the formation of the whole child being a long life learner. The programme offers a balance between learning about or through the subject areas and learning beyond them. We believe that students need to be educated through making connections across the disciplines, discovering ways to integrate the separate subjects and ultimately relating what they learn to life by exploring a set of themes that represents shared human experiences.
The six themes of global significance create a transdisciplinary framework for learning and inquiry that allows students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within subject areas. The themes are: “Who We are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves and Sharing the Planet.”
Being a bilingual school, we have 2 homeroom teachers working together cooperatively inside each classroom. The classroom teachers take responsibility for the language of instruction - Arabic and English languages, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, to support the Primary Years Programme model of transdisciplinary teaching and learning. Subject specific teachers are responsible for Arts, ICT and P.E.

Communication with Parents:

A transparent and sustainable communication between the school and parents is extremely important; therefore the following procedures and strategies are conducted to maintain an open and ongoing channel:

Unit newsletters: to keep parents updated with each unit of study

Weekly Newsletters: Parents receive a weekly newsletter in order to continuously be involved and informed of each child's developmental learning process.

Homework Agenda is used in the Primary School.

Important Dates Calendar: an activity calendar sent by email informing the parents about DAS special activities that will take place during that semester.

Parents' PYP Curriculum Guide: A detailed parental curriculum guide organized by grade level is distributed to all parents at the beginning of each scholastic year and is also available on the schools website.

End of PYP unit planner celebration: students, teachers and parents celebrate the students understanding and actions of the inquiry unit. Student lead the celebration by demonstrating samples of their work. Parents listen to their children sharing their strengths, challenges and their evaluation of the learning process. Teachers are present to facilitate the dialogue and provide support during the celebration.

Report Cards: Parents will be able to observe students achievements through report cards 2 times per year for Kg1 and Kg2 students and four times per year from Kg3 to 5.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: These conferences are held twice a year, once per semester and they give parents and staff the opportunity to communicate.

General parents conferences in the beginning of the year to give an overview of PYP program, school policies. health and safety issues, explain the curriculum plans for the year and answer questions

Sports Day in which students exhibit their physical abilities to their moms.

“Reading Week” held twice a week to encourage students to read and make meaning of selections read.

“Read to Me” program in which students read books weekly and keep a book log.

“Pajama Party” which is an after school storytelling activity held once a year in which mothers come to read a book to their children in a special corner of the classroom.

“Book Swap” designed for students to bring their books and exchange them with their classmates

“Mommy and I” for KG1 and KG2 and “We Work Together” for KG3 students and their moms to share the themes studied in the year and the different strategies to enhance fine and gross motor skills, comprehension, phonemic awareness, thinking and speaking skills.

Communication through Email: The schools send all notifications to parents on their emails or by SMS.
